Happy New Year! May 2017 bring good things.

I celebrated today by finishing up a Remus/Tonks ficlet for this year's Twelfth Night Tales at rt_morelove: just a fluffy short piece, but it was fun to get back into the swing of fic-writing, even if just a little bit. (And in case anyone out there still wants to join the event, it's open until Jan 6; info is here and sign-ups are here.)

Only a Heartbeat Away (2010 words | PG | DH)
It’s the night before the second full moon after Remus married Tonks, and they are still navigating uncertain terrain.

Finally, here's a New Year's "card" I made for an event at the good old pulped_fictions comm back in 2010, because it popped into my head today and I wanted to be sure I could find it again. ;)

Happy New Year!Collapse )

So (so), there are some fics I've been meaning to rec for a while now, but I've been remiss. (I've also been remiss about commenting, grr. Good thing there's a holiday break coming up?)

But the exciting news is, there's a new addition to the fandom for Megan Whalen Turner's Thief series: meldahlie (at fanfiction.net). I've known her for a while as a Potter and Narnia fic-writer, with lots of wonderfully written, character-focused, short gems of stories. So it's fantastic that she's writing Thief fic now too. (And if there's anyone out there who hasn't read MWT's series yet, (a) go have a look ASAP and (b) you might not want to read any fic before you read canon, because this series has wonderful twisty plots and it's well worth avoiding spoilers.)

And I'm not sure if meldahlie wants her identities to cross, so I'll say no more here, but she may have recently joined LJ. :D So, welcome!

Well. When I first started plotting the HBP section of Kaleidoscope, I did not think it would take six whole chapters to get rid of Remus. ;) But as it turns out, from mousy hair to Remus's history with Greyback to tea and sympathy to Patronus changes, there were a few things that needed to be pulled into the story.

But here we finally are. I've now filled in all the gaps up to Out of Sight, which was written quite a long time ago -- and therefore will need some editing and rewriting! That's the next project...

  • Taking Leave (4950 words | PG/mild profanity | HBP)
Remus is cutting all his ties, steeling himself to leave the Order behind and join up with Greyback's pack. Tonks knows he has to leave, but that doesn't mean she is willing to give up.
Tonks had actually sat down with a blank piece of parchment...Collapse )

I can't believe it has taken me since December to finish this chapter of Kaleidoscope. Actually, part of the problem is that the iceberg has calved yet again -- I posted an earlier draft of half of the first scene at rt_morelove in January under the title Taking Leave, but (because Remus just won't get on with it and leave, darn him ;) ) that title now belongs to the next chapter. At this point there are three whole chapters that were originally going to be "the one where Remus leaves" but have turned into something else...Next time. Really.

The short final scene also has a precursor—Invitation, at day_by_drabble in summer 2011. And of course Molly's dinner invitation itself is taken from HBP, chapter 5.

But the nice thing about finally posting this today is that I can dedicate it to sspring92, to wish her a happy birthday, and to thank her for being one of my first LJ friends and a long-time reader! ♥

  • And Yet So Far (4840 words | PG/mild profanity | HBP)
What with missing Sirius, spending every day driving off dementors from Hogsmeade, and helping Remus get ready for an Order mission straight out of his worst nightmares, Tonks isn’t feeling very pink. Which may explain why it’s so hard to keep herself together as Remus lets her further in and pushes her further away, all at the same time.
'To Sirius,' said Tonks, raising her glass of firewhisky.Collapse )

Thanks to huldrejenta, I found out just in time about a commentfest for Dog Days of Summer 2015 at sirius_black (naughty Sirius -- the commentfest post image is rather NSFW if you click through).

Title: The Hardest Word (216 words | PG/mild profanity | Marauder era)
Prompt: "a subtle apology", optional R/S
Notes: In my head, this is genfic, but it could certainly be R/S as well.

Apologies were for the meek, not for the bold.Collapse )

It's time for the annual tradition: A fluffy post-war AU denial-fic, in honor of Remus's birthday. Warning: Lots of fluff ahead. (We can blame this in part on the fact that I'm writing very angsty Kaleidoscope chapters these days...HBP year was just awful for all concerned.)

This is a stand-alone story, but it's part of the Warp and Weft AU ficverse, and this is in fact backstory for a detail seen in Expecto Patronum. There's also a cameo from my OC Thaddeus Johnson, who we first met at the Ministry in the Kaleidoscope story Promises.

Family (1450 words | G | autumn 2008)
Harry and Ginny make a request. Even now, ten years after the war, it's the last thing Remus would ever have imagined.

Tonks reached up and rapped the brass knocker—a lion’s head, now—on the front door of Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place.Collapse )

Happy holidays to anyone who is celebrating anything! :)

The "Twelfth Night Tales" event at rt_morelove is open for posting until January 6 -- it's not too late to sign up (here!) if anyone else wants to join, and there have already been a good dozen fic posts, if anyone is looking for some new R/T to read over the holidays. (It would be lovely to have some art, too -- hint, hint to any artists? ;) )

I took advantage of the opportunity to pull together a new chapter for the HBP part of Kaleidoscope. As always, this is intended as a stand-alone story, but for people keeping track at home, it takes place right after If Battle Lines are Drawn and a couple of weeks before Out of Sight, and there’s a minor reference to the events of Colours Under the Moon. (One more chapter is planned between this one and Out of Sight -- I've started it, but I'm not sure if I'll manage to finish it for Twelfth Night Tales or not.)
  • A Moth to a Flame (3950 words | PG/mild profanity | July of HBP)

In the weeks between losing Sirius and leaving for his mission with Greyback’s pack, Remus fights to hold on to his friendship with Tonks. But the hardest part of all is trying not to want more.

( Tonks Apparated straight into the Burrow’s back garden. )

Hope everyone had a fun Hallowe'en. In honor of the day, here are two ficlets (well, more like drabbles) -- featuring Sirius! Cross-posted from Day of the Black Dog 2014 at sirius_black.

Title: Vol de nuit (136 words, G | Marauder-era)
Characters: Sirius, the motorbike
Summary: The bike was pure power—almost as though the Muggles who made her had kept some distant memory of dragons.
A/N: Thanks to huldrejenta for letting me know about this event, and thanks to the mods who made it happen!

Vol de nuitCollapse )

Title: Hallowe’en, 1980 (340 words, G | Marauder-era)
Characters: Lily, Harry, the Marauders
Summary: Lily hadn’t been sure, not at first.

Right! So, I'm supposed to be finishing the last three HBP installments of the Kaleidoscope series so I can get on with revising Part II. But along the way, this DH plotbunny intervened.

This story needs a few notes, too, I'm afraid. It's not 100% new, because it incorporates a drabble and a ficlet which weren't originally going to be part of the series (until I realized, recently, that this point in time really does need to be included): Restless and Taking Care. But there are also two completely new scenes, and the older pieces underwent a fair amount of revision in order to knit this all together into one coherent (*cough*) hurt/comfort story. (The two new scenes are long enough to qualify this post for my h/c bingo card -- for "unwanted transformation," which I suppose is a bit of a freebie in the R/T fandom, heh.)

One more note: people who have been following all of Kaleidoscope might notice that there's a good bit of thematic overlap between this story and Moving Forward, which currently precedes it in the timeline. But when I eventually revise Part III (that'll be a while yet!), I'm planning major changes to Moving Forward, which will make this story necessary for representing those themes.

That was a lot of preamble. Without additional ado:

Any Road Runs Two Ways (4610 words | PG-13/mild profanity, intimate situations)
    • Remus would do anything to keep the full moon from being a burden on Tonks. But there is such a thing as going too far.
Remus woke early, when the dawn sky was heavy pewter overhead.Collapse )

My first fill for my hc_bingo card! I was rereading Daddy-Long-Legs over the weekend (thank you, Project Gutenberg), and I remembered that one of my prompts was "orphans," and, there you are. Though I'm not sure if I'm cheating, since it's not the orphan that's getting the comfort (just yet)? ;)

This ficlet does contain major spoilers for the novel, so if you haven't read that yet, you might want to give this fic a pass (and go read canon! -- it's a short epistolary novel about an orphan, circa 1910, who is sent to college by an anonymous benefactor to whom she writes letters that are full of humor and fun details about life in a women's college at the time -- unfortunately, the Gutenberg version doesn't have the cute little sketches that pop up in some of the letters, but you can get the idea).

  • Her Last Letter but Two (830 words | PG, mild profanity)

A certain convalescent gets a letter from Miss Judy Abbott. The contents aren't quite what he was expecting to have to force himself to read.

He woke himself coughing again...Collapse )

It's summer! Which means that work has subsided to a dull roar, and I plan to be posting a little more regularly.

Starting with this: We had SpringFest at rt_morelove (here's the masterlist -- look, new Remus/Tonks fic and art!), and I managed to squeeze out a postwar denial!fic in the Warp and Weft series that tackles some plotbunnies I'd been wanting to write for a while. (Matthias has a cameo!) Set between A Matter of Opportunity and Support, though it should stand alone.

    Happily Ever After (4690 words | PG/mild profanity | late May, 1998)

  • Tonks wonders whether she can trust this new happily-ever-after, or whether back-to-normal means that Remus will start to doubt his worth again.

What better way to celebrate Remus Lupin's birthday than with a little post-war AU denialfic? ;)

First Fruits (1570 words | PG/beware of fluff | March 1999)
Remus gets a bit of good news from Kingsley just in time for his birthday. Teddy squirms, Nymphadora drops things, and Andromeda looks on, fondly.
(AU, in the Warp and Weft ficverse. This story stands alone, but it has some W.I.M.P J.M.L.C. plot threads in common with House and Home, Support, and, years later, Natural History Lessons.)

Andromeda closed the door behind her, letting the rattle of the lock announce her return.Collapse )

It's Spring Break this week! I'll be back later with an Accountability Post (haven't done one of those for a while, which may explain a lot, lol) -- and to catch up with posts on my f-list. For now, my guy and I are about to go on a geology hike with friends, enjoying the warm sunny weather after a few chilly days of rain and sleet.

But first, a crucial question for philomytha: Last night[*] I got hold of a copy of Whispers Underground, which appears to be #3 in the Rivers of London series. I have #1 on order from interlibrary loan, but it isn't here yet. So my question is, can I start with #3 and read out of sequence, or will I regret it? ;)

For everyone who hasn't been following philomytha's remarks about this series, it's apparently a gritty London-based mystery series. With secret wizards on the police force. Sounds like it pushes most of my buttons.

[*]I also found a copy of Sharing Knife: Legacy in the same used bookstore. It was a good book-scrounging night!

The Stocking Filler Exchange at rt_morelove was great fun! Participants posted something like two dozen fics, ficlets, and drabbles, and a couple of art posts as well. There's a masterlist going up soon at the comm — stay tuned.

Here's what I managed to post for the event. First, two fluffy ficlets, one set early in OotP and one set mid-DH (because I firmly believe there was time for some fluff in DH!).
  • Fitting In (830 words | OotP | PG)
Tonks gets a dinner invitation from Sirius — and a little surprise along the way.

  • Fuzzy Socks (950 words | DH | PG-13 / snogging with intent)
Tonks takes up knitting again. Remus is rendered speechless.
The other post is a first take on the third chapter in the HBP sequence for the Kaleidoscope series. Writing this has actually given me some thoughts on how I want to revise the second chapter and write a different final scene for this third one once I reach the editing/revising phase, but for the moment, here it is. :)
  • If Battle Lines Are Drawn (3400 words | HBP | PG / mild profanity)
At the first full meeting of the Order of the Phoenix after the fight at the Ministry, Molly keeps noticing things that are...different.
I'm still reading at the comm myself (sorry for being slow!), but anyone who's been missing Remus/Tonks should be sure to check it out.

Last holiday season, and then again last summer, some of us got together and posted a little collection of Remus/Tonks drabbles and fics. This year, I thought we might do something similar. But gilpin25, huldrejenta, and I got to talking, and this happened!

Want to join in the fun? Join the new community, rt_morelove. We don't have cookies, but we do have icons!

The Stocking Filler Exchange is a simple, low-key, exchange-style event. Anyone who likes can sign up and leave up to three prompts. If you've signed up, then you can claim a prompt for fic or art -- anything from drabbles and drawbles to multi-panel artworks and big-bang-sized fics are welcome. :D

Wotcher! (welcome and rules post) | Sign-up and prompts | Icons

Prompts and prompt claiming are open now! Fic/art posting starts 24 December and runs through 20 January. If you even think you might be interested in writing or drawing something, or if you've got prompts to share, join the community and help spread a little more R/T love. :)

(I didn't have time tonight to figure out how to make code that makes a graphic easy to share, but if anyone would like to use the link to the graphic, which is here, and repost it on your LJ to help spread the word, do feel free!)

Observant readers of this scintillating journal (ha!) may have noticed that there's been a certain lack of discussion of any Remus/Tonks holiday drabble/drawble event, even though I told several people I'd be hosting one again this holiday season.

There's a good reason for that lack, which I hope will prove to be a fun one. ;) For now, let me just say: stay tuned, and if you're looking for something to do while you're standing in line at the post office to mail your holiday packages like I'll be doing ... use your time wisely by conjuring up R/T related fic and art prompts.

That is all. For now. ;)

This busy fall has not been conducive to fic-writing, sadly. But the long Thanksgiving weekend finally gave me a chance to finish the Kaleidoscope chapter I started at the end of the summer. This one takes place near the beginning of HBP, right after Now Wait for the Tide to Turn.

This chapter actually involved an interesting coincidence of timing. Reading over the Christmas Eve scene in HBP, where Remus tells Harry that he had not known for many years that Greyback was the werewolf who bit him, made me wonder just how Remus found out about that -- so this was going to be the chapter with the Greyback revelation. And then, just when I had barely begun drafting an outline for this, the Pottermore bio came out, chock-full of details about Lyall Lupin and Greyback and just what it was that happened to Remus when he was bitten. So, although Kaleidoscope-verse will not be taking into account any of the new Pottermore details of Remus and Tonks's relationship from OotP through DH -- because this is my version of how that all happened -- I did decide to make Remus's childhood compatible with the Pottermore backstory.

(Also: Bonus points to anyone who figures out what the chapter title is supposed to mean, and double bonus points for anyone who figures out a better way to achieve that, heh.)

  • Colours Under the Moon (3090 words | PG/mild profanity)
The more Tonks learns about Remus's mission to infiltrate Greyback's pack, the more reasons she has to worry.
Tonks dumped her satchel on the floor of her little bedroom and hung her Auror robes carefully in the wardrobe.Collapse )

So, I've been having one of those months where I have work up to the eyeballs (mostly for good reasons this time, for which I'm thankful, but it's still not great being this busy), and I can't keep up with online life or make progress on my current fic projects at all. And then something snaps, and I just have to write something -- except that what comes out is some kind of sappy hurt/comfort piece. ;) Well, here it is... (I'm hoping the work circus will calm down in another week or two, because there is a Kaleidoscope chapter-in-progress I'd really like to finish. And there's lots of stuff accumulating around LJ that I'd like to read!)

In the Wee Hours (316 words | PG | set maybe in early DH?)

She didn’t realize, at first, that he was even having a nightmare.Collapse )
